virgil’s - soda product photography

Sweet Spring Sips.

I love me an easy-going client, and Virgil’s definitely falls into that category!

Virgil’s is a handcrafted soda brand…or “pop” for you East Coast friends…that has said goodbye to all those nasty chemicals that can be found in traditional sodas.  They’ve got this old-school branding that reminds me of drinking a sarsaparilla in the heart of Gold Country. Kinda cool!

This creative adventure was a dual photo and stop-motion product photoshoot.  Virgil’s had one, clear directive for this photoshoot:  Spring.  That was it!  As long as the images were giving some solid Spring vibes, the sky was the limit.

The Virgil’s team highlighted a few images from my past work that really resonated with them, and they sent me on my merry, creative way backed by their full trust.

You see what I mean about easy-going?

Armed with my singular directive for this product photoshoot, I got to go wherever Spring vibes lead me.

Honestly, at first, it was too much freedom.  I almost need a few restricting parameters to build helpful guidelines and narrow down a clear direction and then creatively build from that direction.

At first, my mind ran in circles with all kinds of creative ideas and techniques that I have been wanting to try out.  From checkerboard picnics and rolling fields of flower, fresh sprouting green grass, to baby bunnies and chicks, and of course soft blue skies with feathery clouds wandering about.

I had new props that I wanted so badly to incorporate, but did they actually make sense for this shoot?

Would I have time to incorporate some new techniques and would they fit in with the overall theme?

The decision fatigue was real!

Once I got out of my own head and focused in, I decided to take my inspiration from the colors of Spring.

Color is such a powerful tool and one I utilize more times than not.  It speaks to us both consciously and subconsciously, so what better way to communicate Spring vibes?

Blue for the sky that peaks out after months of grey, green for the rehydrated grass, and bright yellow to represent the abundance of Spring flowers that we look forward to every year.  To round it out, I added in some actual grass, flowers and fluffy clouds as props to bring it all together.

Virgil’s absolutely loved it!

A trusting relationship between client and photographer can really produce amazing work.  Speaking from a photographer’s perspective, it’s such a wonderful feeling.  I truly cherish and revel in these relationships when they come along.

Don’t worry brands, I’m not saying you must take a back seat to the creative process.  Detail oriented collaboration is also wonderful!

However, if you would like to take a huge chunk of work off your plate, or maybe you don’t completely love the creative process, find a photographer who’s style you love and give them your trust.  If their portfolio is screaming “goals” to you, chances are you’ll be happy with the photography they create for your brand.

If you happen to be a brand in the market for a photographer, and your style has brought you here, I’d love to hear from you!  Head over to my contact page and send me a message.
