skinny dipped - chocolate product photography

These nuts are irresistible!

Seriously. I brought a couple bags of Skinny Dipped almonds to my sister after the photoshoot and she yelled at me, because she’s been trying to snack less and not enough will-power exists for her to summon the words to tell me to take them back. The Lemon Bliss almonds really got her. 😂

Skinny Dipped first came to market with chocolate covered almonds, but has since added a plethora of tasty, better-for-you treats to their product line. With a variety of new products, it was important to make sure each snack got it’s time in the spotlight.

The goal for this product photoshoot was to emphasize the arrival of the newly launched Skinny Dipped chocolate bars, add in a few “recipe” images to encourage different ways to enjoy Skinny Dipped snacks, and, finally, include a hero shot of the brand’s flagship product, those forementioned chocolate covered almonds.

That’s a lot to pack into a small photoshoot, but I think we handled it just fine!

It wasn’t intentionally planned per say, but I quickly noticed a common theme pop up during this photoshoot. So many of the shots relied on gravity defying components.  Caramel drips and pulls, floating chocolate bars, falling ingredients, balancing products.

I’m fairly sure that most of these details go unnoticed by the conscious mind.  Only a small percentage of people, such as fellow photographers or food stylists, would recognize and appreciate the amount of work that goes into an image like this.

However, these spectacular details sure do captivate the subconscious!  Drips, pulls and magically floating products are the pain staking attributes that stop us in our scroll, make an advertisement successful and inspire the stupendous feeling of “winning!” at the merciless game of marketing.

Is it worth the extra minutes or hours it takes to stage and composite gravity defying images like the ones I created for Skinny Dipped?

Well, absolutely!  Plain and simple, I find joy in spending hours in the studio perfecting artistic details, and it makes me happy when clients like Skinny Dipped benefit from that hard work and creativity.  My client’s success very much feels like my success.
